Last year in Coláiste Mhuire there were a few students from abroad attending the school for the term
Anuraidh i gColáiste Mhuire bhí scata daltaí ón iasacht ag freastal ar an scoil sin ar feadh téarm
Learning about our own heritage and about the folklore of the country
Ag foghlaim faoinár n-oidhreacht féin agus faoi bhéaloideas na tíre
as well as superstitions, customs. traits and religion of our own population
in éineacht le piseoga, nósanna, tréithe agus creideamh dár muintir féin
Before the end of the course a project was given to them to them on the festivals of Ireland and the most important ones to us in this country
Roimh deireadh an chúrsa tugadh tionscadal dóibh bunaithe ar fhéilte na hÉireann agus na cinn is tábhachtaí dúinn sa tír
The students were working in pair groups and they had to interview a family and then to write a report about it.
Bhí na daltaí ag obair i ngrúpaí beirte agus bhí orthu clann a chur faoi agallamh agus ansin tuairisc a scríobh faoi
They asked them about the biggest festivals in Ireland and what the people of Ireland do to celebrate those festivals
D’fhiafraigh siad díobh faoi na fhéilte is mó in Éirinn agus cad a dhéanann muintir na tíre chun na féilte sin a chéiliúradh
They started talking about one of the biggest festivals that we have, St. Patrick’s day that is on, on the 17th of March every year with a big parade in the city centres all over the country
Thosaigh siad ag caint faoi cheann de na Féilte is mó atá againn; Lá Fhéile Oadraig a bhíonn ar siúl ar an seachtú lá déag Mí na Márta gach uile blian le paráid mhór i lár na gcathracha go léir ar fud na tíre
On that day the people of the country celebrate the man who brought christianity to Ireland and banished the snakes from the country
Ar an lá sin bíonn muintir na tíre ag comóradh an fhir a thóg críostaíocht go hÉirinn agus a dhíbir na péisteanna ón tír
Everyone is dressed in green clothes and a shamrock worn by everybody
Bíonn gach duine gléasta in éadaí uaine agus seamróg á chaitheamh ag chuile dhuine
in every pub they are playing traditional music the whole day and in the restaurants there are tasty traditional dishes on the menu, for example; irish stew and pudding
I ngach teach tabharirne bíonn siad ag seinm ceoil traidisiúnta an lá ar fad agus sna bialanna bíonn miasaí blasta traidisiúnta ar an mbiachlár, cuir i gcás; stobhacj agus drúisín
They continued to talk about Halloween at the end of october. It is a pagan festival.
Lean siad ar aghaidh ag caint faoi Oíche Shamhna ag deireadh mí deireadh fómhair. Is féile Phágánach í.
On that day people believe that the spirit of the dead returns to us and people dress up to banish the spirits
Ar an lá sin creideann daoine go bhfilleann spriod na marbh inár measc agus gléasann daoine suas chun na spriodeanna a dhíbirt
Children dress up as witches, as skeletons and as ghosts and they go from house to house looking for nuts, sweets, fruit and money
Gléasann páistí suas mar chailligh, mar chreatlaigh fir agus mar thaibhsí agus téann siad ó theach go teach ag iarraidh cnónna, milseáin, torthaí agus airgead
Barn brack is eaten at home with everyone looking for the ring
Itear barán breac sa bhaile le chuile duine ag lorg an fháinne
The houses are decorated as well with spiders and with pumpkins and out in the garden they light bonfires
Bíonn na tithe maisithe suas freisin le damhan alla agus le pumpcíní agus amuigh sa gháirdín lasann siad tinte chnámha
