Types of FGM
Type 1: Clitoris +/- prepuce
Type 2: Clitoris+labia minora +/- majora
Type 3: Narrowing of vagina
Type 4: All other
How common is FGM?
- Worldwide 125 million with 3 million at risk each year
- UK 137,000 affected
- 1.5% of women giving birth in UK
Countries with more than 80% of women affected
Somalia Sudan Sierra Leone Eritrea Egypt Guinea Djibouti Mali
What percentage of FGM is type 3?
10%
What infections are people at risk of after FGM?
UTI
Bacterial vaginosis
Type 2 Herpes Simplex
Law on FGM
- ILLEGAL to do or procure unless necessary for physical/mental health or associated with labour/childbirth
- ILLEGAL to arrange for UK national/resident to be taken out of country for FGM
- ILLEGAL for parents to fail to protect child from FGM
- If FGM confirmed in < 18 years must be reported to police within 1 month
Who should have FGM recording?
EVERYONE with FGM should have non-anonymised data recorded and submitted to HSCIC.
Who should have FGM reporting?
Any child with confirmed/suspected/at risk FGM.
Any pregnant woman who is high risk on risk assessment.
Reporting is to police or social services.
When is deinfibulation done?
Ideally at 20 weeks gestation but can be done in first stage labour, time of delivery or peri-operatively after CS
