Law on FGM

A
  1. ILLEGAL to do or procure unless necessary for physical/mental health or associated with labour/childbirth
  2. ILLEGAL to arrange for UK national/resident to be taken out of country for FGM
  3. ILLEGAL for parents to fail to protect child from FGM
  4. If FGM confirmed in < 18 years must be reported to police within 1 month

Who should have FGM recording?

A

EVERYONE with FGM should have non-anonymised data recorded and submitted to HSCIC.

Who should have FGM reporting?

A

Any child with confirmed/suspected/at risk FGM.
Any pregnant woman who is high risk on risk assessment.

Reporting is to police or social services.

When is deinfibulation done?

A

Ideally at 20 weeks gestation but can be done in first stage labour, time of delivery or peri-operatively after CS
