8.3 Study Guide Flashcards
Sex-Linked
Occur on the “X” chromosome-Women have 2 whereas Males only have 1 copy of the chromosome.
What is a carrier?
Women can be carriers if one of their “X” chromosomes has the trait and the other doesn’t, Males can not be carriers.
Do carriers show the trait?
Carriers do not show the trait, however they can still it on to their offspring.
Autosomal
Occur in normal chromosomes not the only the code for sex.
The difference between Sex-Linked and Autosomal
Males have 1 copy for sex-linked as opposed to the 2 copies for autosomal
Autosomal Dominant
One or more dominant alleles cause the full-blown disease-Dominant alleles cause the disease.
Autosomal Recessive
Two non-functioning alleles cause the genetic disorder. Dominant alleles do not cause the disease, being homozygous recessive causes the disease.
What is a sex-influenced trait?
An Autosomal trait influenced by sex hormones.
How do you rule the different modes of inheritance through a pedigree?
By looking at the parents and grandparents(incase the disease can skip generations)
