6.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What are the types of diffusion?
Simple, Facilitated, and Active Transport.
How is simple diffusion different from facilitated diffusion?
In simple diffusion, the molecules move directly across the phospholipid bilayer, whereas in facilitated diffusion molecules go through transport proteins in the phospholipid bilayer.
What makes Active Transport special compared to the other two types of diffusion?
It required energy, (ATP)
How does each process of diffusion move across the concentration gradient?
Simple: High -> Low
Facilitated: High -> Low
Active: Low -> High
What does hypertonic mean?
Higher solute concentration
What does hypotonic mean?
Lower solute concentration
What does Isotonic mean?
The Same solute concentration
What is endocytosis?
The movement of molecules into the cell.
What is exocytosis?
The movement of molecules out of the cell.
How does surface area and volume change in relation to one another?
The Volume of a cell increases at a higher rate than surface area.
What is Osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane
