3.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What is the primary structure in proteins?
The order of the amino acids
What is the secondary structure in proteins?
Small sections of folding can be seen in all polypeptides.
What is the tertiary structure in proteins?
Final 3D shape of a single polypeptide.
What is the quaternary structure in proteins?
More than one polypeptide chain bonded together.
What are the four levels of protein structure?
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary.
What occurs during protein denaturation?
Unfolding of a protein
Where do hydrophobic interactions go on the chain?
On the inside of the chain
Where do hydrophilic interactions go on the chain?
On the outside of the chain.
Where do Acidic bonds and Basic bonds go on the chain?
On the inside facing each other.
Where do Cystein side chains go on the chain?
Also on the inside of the chain.
Would change on the primary level affect the tertiary level?
Yes
Would change on the tertiary level affect the primary level?
No
What would happen if a hydrophobic amino acids was swapped out for a hydrophilic one?
The entire structure would change as a result, not only the primary level.
