6.1 & 6.2 Study Guide Flashcards
What is a prokaryote?
A cell without a nucleus
What is a eukaryote?
A cell with a nucleus
What are two types of eukaryotic cells?
Plant and Animal Cells
What is special about plant cells?
They have a cell wall and contain chloroplasts.
What do both plant and Animal cells have in common?
They both have mitochondria.
What is true for all cells?
They have DNA, a cell membrane Ribosomes, and cytoplasm.
What are the two membrane carbohydrates?
Glycolipids & Glycoproteins
What do they do in the cell membrane?
They play a key role in cell to cell recognition
What is cell-to-cell recognition?
the ability for a cell to distinguish different cells.
What is another reason cell-to-cell recognition is important?
It is important in organ and tissue development and is the Basis for the rejection of foreign cells by the immune system.
What are two benefits of prokaryotic cells?
They can reproduce more quickly. They are also more energy efficient.
What is the benefit of eukaryotic cells?
They can combine to make much more complex organisms.
Where do all cells export waste through?
The cell membrane and some go through the proteins
What do all cells use as energy?
ATP
What part of a phospholipid is the hydrophilic and which is the hydrophobic end?
The head is the hydrophilic end whereas the tail is the hydrophobic end
