8] Research Design Flashcards
What are the steps of understanding
1: prediction
2: application
3: explanation
4: description
What are the two types of description
1: concrete
E.g: census
2: abstract
E.g: how many people feel sad
What is prediction
It refers to predicting information you do not have
What is explanation
It is when you understand work or something to happen and how A cause B
E.g: Earth rotating causes the Sun to rise each morning so if the Earth stopped rotating the Sun wouldn’t rise
Causation: How can we be sure one thing causes another
1: There must be a relationship between them
2: We must be sure the cause precedes the effect
3: We must be sure that no other variables can explain the relationship
What is a confounding variable
A confounding variable is one that creates the illusion of a causal relationship between two variables
E.g: imagine people who attend more lectures in college tend to do better in exams
Gravetter and Forzano four broad research strategies
1: Description
2: Correlation
3: Experimental
4: Quasi-experimental and non-experimental
Research types
1: Explanatory (theory building)
2: Confirmatory (theory testing)
3: Longitudinal
4: Cross-sectional
