4 ] What We Measure (Self Report And Biologica) Flashcards
What does self report measures mean
Instead of observing people’s behaviour we can just ask them about themselves
This is done through questionnaires and surveys
What is a questionnaire
They are tools used to collect information about groups of people in relation to attitudes, behaviors, demographics and knowledge
They are predetermined questioned with a fixed method of response
The steps of designing a questionnaire are
1: what info should be collected
3: expert review
3: pretest the questionnaire
4: review results and edit to create final questionnaire
The individual questions in a questionnaire obtain information on
1: behaviour on what people do or have done
2: attitudes on what people think about
3: feelings on how they feel about something
4: knowledge about what they know or believe is true
5: attributes on who they are
Types of questions designs in a questionnaire
1: points on a scale
They can use the likert scale which has options on how much the agree or disagree with a statement, with 5-7 points being recommended
They can also use the semantic differential scale which use bipolar adjectives to determine a position on a statement
Types of questions designs in a questionnaire
2: independent alternatives
They are used when points along a scale are not an option and are independent of each other, with the differences being either yes or no
What is physiological measures
It refers to the scientific method of measuring of individual differences in mental abilities and can be divided in three categories of genetic, brain focused physiology and all other physiology
What are the two types of gene studies
1: heritability
This is where you study the shared physical or physiological similarities and can determine if you have a high chance of something due to your genetics
2: genetic testing
It is identifying the gene responsible for something and trying to trace it back in order to figure out how to prevent it
What are they types of brain imaging
1: EEG
Cheap way of scanning the brain and tracking the electrical activity in the brain but cannot localize where it is coming from
2: MRI
It’s an expensive method of use magnetic fields to follow and track the blood flows direction throughout the brain but also cannot localize where it’s coming from
3: Transactional Magnetic Stimulation
Used for disrupting the electrical functioning of the cortex at a particular location and allows for a slightly different ways of testing what that location I do
Other physiological methods
1: heart rate
2: respiration
3: electrodermal activity
4: pupil dial action
5: sexual arousal
