7.4 The structure of the heart Flashcards
What does the left side of the heart deal with
Oxygenated blood from the lungs
What does the right side of the heart deal with
Deoxygenated blood from the body
What are the names of the two chambers on each side of the heart
Atrium - thin walled and elastic and stretches as it collects blood Venntricles - much thicker muscular wall as it has to contract strongly to pump blood some distance
What is the reasoning behind having two pumps
To increase the pressure of the blood before it is distributed to the left
Where does the right ventricle pump blood to
The lungs, and has a thinner muscular wall than the left
Where does the left ventricle pump blood to
The body, and has a much thicker muscular wall than the right
What are the names of the valves between the atrium and ventricles
Tricuspid - Right side Bicuspid - Left side (atrioventricular)
What does the ventricles do in regards to blood
Carry blood towards or away from the heart and into arteries
What do the atria do in regards to blood
Receive blood from the veins
What are the vessels called that connect the heart to the lungs
Pulmonary vessels
What is the aorta connected to and what type of blood does it carry
The left ventricle and carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body EXCEPT the lungs
What is the vena cava connected to and what type of blood does it carry
The right atrium and brings deoxygenated blood back from the tissues of the body (except lungs)
What is the pulmonary artery connected to and what type of blood does it carry
The right ventricle and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where its oxygen is replenished and co2 removed. Unusually for an artery it carries deoxygenated blood
What is the pulmonary vein connected to and what type of blood does it carry
The left atrium and brings oxygenated blood back from the lungs. Unusually for a vein it carries oxygenated blood
What is unusual about the pulmonary artery
It carries deoxygenated blood opposed to the usual oxygenated blood arteries characteristically carry
