3.8 The cell cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle
A
- Interphase
- Nuclear division
- Division of the cytoplasm
2
Q
Describe interphase
A
The stage that occupies the most of the cell cycle, no division takes place
3
Q
Describe nuclear division
A
The stage where the nucleus divides either into two or four (mitosis or meiosis)
4
Q
Describe division of the cytoplasm
A
The stage where the cytoplasm divides to produce two new cells or four new cells (mitosis or meiosis)
5
Q
What is cancer
A
A group of diseases caused by a growth disorder of cells. It is caused by damage to the genes that regulate the cell cycle
6
Q
How do drugs used to treat cancer disrupt the cell cycle
A
- Prevent DNA from replicating
2. Inhibiting the metaphase portion of mitosis by preventing the spindle fibres forming
