7.3 Natural Selection Flashcards
What do most organisms produce?
Large numbers of offspring
Why do organisms show variation?
Because of differences in their genes
What do all the organisms in a population compete for?
Water, food, mates, territory, shelter from predators
What will the organisms most suited to their environment do better? (the fittest)
Survive
What is an example of how an organism may be best suited to their environment?
If they are camouflaged, best eyesight to find food, strongest and quickest etc
The organisms which survive are most likely to…?
Breed successfully
What are the key words you must use when describing the process of natural selection?
Mutation, variation, best adapted, survive, breed, pass on genes to offspring
What is a mutation?
When a gene accidentally changes and becomes a new form of a gene
What will happen to a mutated gene if it is advantageous?
It will be passed on to the offspring
