6.2 Types of Reproduction Flashcards
What are the two forms of reproduction?
Sexual and asexual reproduction
What is asexual reproduction?
It does not involve the fusing of gametes, and only one individual is needed as the parent. The offspring will be genetically identical to the parent
What are the identical copies called produced by asexual reproduction?
Clones
What is sexual reproduction?
The fusion of male and female gametes. Mixture of genetic variation results in variety in the offspring
What are gametes?
Sex cells
What are the gametes in humans?
Egg and sperm
Why can offspring produced by sexual reproduction not be identical to a parent
Because they have a combination of two sets of genes
What leads to variation in offspring?
Random mixing of genes
