2.6 Hormones and the Control of Plant Growth Flashcards
What are plants sensitive to?
Light, gravity and moisture
What do plant shoots grow towards and what is it called?
Towards light: phototropism
What do roots grow towards and what is it called?
Down towards gravity and water: gravitropism
What is the hormone that controls phototropism and gravitropism?
Auxin
What does unequal distribution of auxin cause?
Unequal growth
What does unequal growth result in?
Bending of the shoot or root
What can plant growth hormones be used as?
Weed killers and to stimulate root growth
What side does the root grow more on?
The side with the least auxin, making it bend and grow down towards the force of gravity
What side does the shoot grow more on?
The side with most auxin, making it bend and grow up away from the force of gravity
What happens once a shoot or root has grown up or down?
The auxin becomes evenly spread again
In a root, what side does most auxin gather on?
The lower side
In a shoot, what side does most auxin gather on?
The lower side
