What does a healthy diet contain?
The right balance of all food types and the right amounts of energy

What is needed to keep the body healthy?
A combination of a balanced diet and regular exercise
What is also needed to keep the body healthy?
Mineral ions and vitamins
What happens if a persons diet is unbalanced?
The person can become malnourished
What happens to your body if you take in too much energy or too few vitamins?
Malnourished - if you take in too much energy then you gain weight, two few vitamins and you develop deficiency disease
What happens when you exercise?
More energy is used by the body
What does exercise increase?
Metabolic rate
Why does your body need energy?
To fuel the chemical reactions in the body that keep you alive
What is metabolic rate?
The speed at which chemical reactions happen in the body
What should a healthy diet provide?
The right amount of energy for each individual
What is the chemical reaction that allows cells to release energy from food?
Respiration
What does metabolic rate vary with? (5 things)
Age, gender, proportion of muscle to fat in the body, amount of exercise the person does and genetic traits
What happens to metabolic rate when we exercise?
It increases and stays high for a while afterwards
