2.1 Responding to Change Flashcards
What does the nervous system have?
Receptors to detect stimuli
Where are receptors found?
In sense organs
What are sense organs?
The eye, ear, nose, tongue and skin
What does the nervous system allow humans to do?
React to their surroundings and co-ordinate behaviour
What happens after a receptor has detected a stimuli?
Electrical impulses pass to the brain along neurons (nerve cells)
What are some examples of stimuli?
Light, sound, chemicals, temperature changes, touch and pain
What two things form the central nervous system? (CNS)
The brain and spinal chord
What do nerves contain?
Neurons (nerve cells)
What do sensory neurons do?
Carry impulses from the receptor to the CNS
What do motor neurons do?
Carry impulses from the CNS to effector organs
What are examples of effector organs?
Muscles and glands
How do muscles respond?
By contracting
How do glands respond?
By secreting chemicals
