1.7 Growing and Investigating Bacteria Flashcards
What can bacteria be grown in?
Agar jelly
What are micro-organisms grown for in a lab?
To find the effect of antibiotics on certain bacteria
What must happen before an investigation into bacteria?
All the equipment must be sterilised to ensure that unwanted microorganisms do not affect the culture
Where might contamination come from?
The air, your skin
What do bacteria need to grow?
Warmth and oxygen
What temperature should bacteria be incubated at in school?
25 degrees celcius
What temperature should bacteria be incubated at in industry?
35 degrees celius
What two ways must you keep the bacteria culture pure?
Sterilising the equipment by passing the metal loop through a flame and seal the lid of the petridish
Why should be petridish be not sealed so it is airtight?
So oxygen can still get into it and harmful anaerobic bacteria do not grow
