Q

What is Macrocytic anemia?

A
  • Mean Corpuscle Volume is greater than 100
  • Is not a disease in the sense of having a single pathology, but is rather a condition. As such it is the class name for a set of pathologies that all produce somewhat the same red blood cell abnormality.

Q

What is Mean Corpuscle Volume?

A

It is the average volume of red cells. It can be directly measured by automated hematology analyzer, or it can be calculated from hematocrit (Hct) and the red blood cell count (RBC)

Q

What is Normocytic Anemia?

A
  • MCV- 80 to 100 normal
  • As an anemia with a mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of 80-100 which is the normal range. However the hematocrit and hemoglobin is decreased.

Q

What is Microcytic Anemia?

A
  • MCV is less than 80
  • As the presence of small, often hypo chromic, red blood cells in a peripheral blood smear and is usually characterized by a low MCV.

Q

What is Thrombocytosis?

A
  • Greater than 440,00/uL
  • To many platelets. It can be a reaction to an infection (reactive thrombocytosis), or it can be due to a blood and bone marrow disease.
