7.3 Intro to Hematology Flashcards
What is a CBC?
Complete Blood Count
What is Macrocytic anemia?
- Mean Corpuscle Volume is greater than 100
- Is not a disease in the sense of having a single pathology, but is rather a condition. As such it is the class name for a set of pathologies that all produce somewhat the same red blood cell abnormality.
What is Mean Corpuscle Volume?
It is the average volume of red cells. It can be directly measured by automated hematology analyzer, or it can be calculated from hematocrit (Hct) and the red blood cell count (RBC)
What is Normocytic Anemia?
- MCV- 80 to 100 normal
- As an anemia with a mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of 80-100 which is the normal range. However the hematocrit and hemoglobin is decreased.
What is Microcytic Anemia?
- MCV is less than 80
- As the presence of small, often hypo chromic, red blood cells in a peripheral blood smear and is usually characterized by a low MCV.
What is a leading cause of Microcytic Anemia?
Iron deficiency is a common cause
What is Leukocytosis?
- WBC greater than 11x10^3/uL
- Greater than normal
What is Leukopenia?
- Lower than normal blood count
- A WBC count below 5000
If WBC count is low which leukocyte is normally always low?
-Neutrophils
What is Thrombocytosis?
- Greater than 440,00/uL
- To many platelets. It can be a reaction to an infection (reactive thrombocytosis), or it can be due to a blood and bone marrow disease.
What is Thrombocytopenia?
- Less than 140,000/uL
- Too few platelets
What are some causes of thrombocytopenia?
- Bone Marrow Disorder: Aplastic anemia, leukemia
- Drug induced: Alcohol or chemotherapy
- Infectious: HIV
- Nutritional: B12/Folate
Why would someone eat dirt?
Pica, iron deficiency anemia, thus the man is trying to increase intake of iron through eating of clay, dirt, etc.
Normal Hemoglobin level?
Male: 16 +/- 2 g/dL
Female: 14 +/- g/dL
Normal Hematocrit level?
Male: 47 +/-%
Female: 42 +/-%
