6.3 Limb Structure and Function Flashcards
Lower limb attachment to trunk of body?
Pelvic
Upper limb attachment to trunk of body?
Pectoral
What are the 3 segments of both the upper and lower extremities?
Proximal, Intermediate, and distal
What are the functions of the lower limbs?
- Support body weight
- Provide locomotion
- Maintain balance
What is the proximal segment of the lower limbs?
Femoral
What are the 6 regions of the lower limb?
1) Gluteal
2) Femoral
3) Knee
4) Leg
5) Talocrural
6) Foot
What is the intermediate segment of the lower limb?
Leg
What is the distal segment of the lower limbs?
The foot
Where does the inguinal ligament attach?
The ASIS to the pubic tubercle
What fascia envelopes the thigh?
Fascia lata
What three compartments make up the femoral area?
Anterior, posterior, and Medial compartments
What divides the thigh into segments?
The intermuscular septa
What 3 compartments are in the leg?
The Anterior, posterior, and lateral compartments
What spans the space between the tibia and fibula and separates the compartments?
Interosseous membrane
What is the upper extremity function?
- Positioning of hand
- Hand is used as tool
- Grasp, strike, object manipulation, and fine motor
What makes up the proximal segment of the upper limbs?
The arm
What makes up the intermediate segment of the upper limbs?
The forearm
What makes up the distal segment of the upper limb?
The hand
What two compartments is the arm divided into?
The anterior and posterior compartments
What musculature does the anterior portion of the upper limbs contain?
The flexor musculature
What musculature does the posterior portion of the upper limbs contain?
The extensor musculature
What marks the transition from the trunk to the thigh?
The gluteal region marks the transition from trunk to thigh.
What are the boundaries of the lower extremity?
Iliac crest, gluteal sulcus(fold), greater trochanter, and Natal (intergluteal) cleft
What is the carrying angle?
When the arm is extended with the palm facing forward or up the bones of the upper arm and forearm are not perfectly aligned. The deviation from a straight line occurs in the direction of the thumb. This permits the arm to be swung without contacting the hips.
What is the basic motion of the talocrural joint?
- The talocrural joint lies between the curl and talus regions.
- Allows for: plantar flexion and dorsiflexion
What is the basic motion of the knee joint?
- Is a modified hinge joint between tibia and femur
- Allows for flexion and extension.
What is the basic motion of the numero-ulnar joint?
- Between the humerus and ulna
- Allows for flexion and extension
