7.2 Study Guide Flashcards
What is the difference between homologous chromosomes and sister chromatids?
Homologous chromosomes have different alleles and are used in reproduction, and sister chromatids are identical to each other and used in cell replication.
What happens in each phase of Mitosis?
Interphase is the cell in preparation, Prophase the nucleus disappears while spindle fibers form. Metaphase is when they are pushed to the middle by the spindle fibers, then in Anaphase, half of each are pulled to opposite ends. In Telophase/Cytokinesis, the new cells form with their alleles.
How to identify what stage of mitosis a cell is in?
If the cell looks whole, its Interphase. If the cell looks whole but spindle fibers are forming, then its Prophase. If the chromosomes and chromatids are in the middle, its Metaphase. If they’re split apart then it’s Anaphase. If they’re dividing and becoming separate, its Telophase/Cytokinesis.
What are the results of Mitosis? What do we use it for?
The results of Mitosis are two identical cells that can be used to repair damaged cells.
