2.5 Study Guide Flashcards
What is Cohesion?
H bonding between H2O molecules.
What is Adhesion?
H bonding between H2O and other substances.
What is Specific Heat?
Resistance in change in temperature.
What is Heat of Vaporization?
Removes body heat- evaporative cooling.
What is Concentration?
The amount of something.
What is pH?
Potential hydrogen.
What is pOH?
-log[OH-]
What is a hydroxide ion?
Base solution.
What is a hydronium ion?
Acidic solution.
What is an acid?
A hydronium ion.
What is an base?
A hydroxide ion.
What are the five properties of water?
Cohesion, Adhesion, Specific Heat, Heat of Vaporization, Ice.
How does water’s polarity or ability to make hydrogen bonds give it it’s property?
It has positive and negative charges. This allows it to form all of its properties.
What are some examples of why each property is important to living things?
Cohesion and Adhesion are good for plants getting water, Specific Heat and Heat of Vaporization help with cooling down, and ice helps with solidifying water, but is less dense, helping keep lakes good over the years.
Calculate pH, [H3O+], [OH-], pOH when given one of the four variables.
If given pH 8, pOH will be 4. Then [H30+] would be 1x10-8, and pOH would be 1x10-4
