7.2 enzymes and substrates Flashcards
study guide containing: enzymes, substrates, etc.
Enzyme
Biological catalysts that turn reactants into products.
Substrate
A reactant that binds to an enzyme.
Active site
Where a substrate binds to an enzyme.
Activation Energy
The minimum energy required to allow a reaction to occur.
What are the four Properties of Enzymes?
- Reaction Specific- finding the “perfect” match (substrate)
- Not consumed in reaction- not a reactant itself.
- Made almost entirely of Protien
- Affected by cellular condition- denatured by: temperature, pH, or salinity.
How would you maximize enzyme activity considering all of the factors discussed in class?
Lowering temperatures will increase the catalysed reactions.
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation of enzymes.
Inhibition is started when a inhibitor attaches itself to an enzyme to break away the substrate and altering its shape.
Activation occurs when an activator is added to an enzyme in order to activate the active site for it (the enzyme) to bond with the substrate. (a lot of activate in that paragraph…)
