10.3 meiosis Flashcards
meiosis
the porcess of creating new cells from parent cells that aren’t direct copies.
homologous chromosones
two of each type of chromosones
sister chromatids
a direct copy of another chromatid
fertilization
when the egg cell is able to start dividing.
asexual reproduction
one parent, exact copies.
sexual rerproduction
two parents, variation in “copies”
gamete
a mature haploid male or female germ cell which is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction to form a zygote.
somatic cell
any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells.e
tetrad
a four-part structure that forms during prophase I of meiosis and consists of two homologous chromosomes, each composed of two identical chromatids.
sources of genetic variation:
Independant assortment, crossing over, sexual reproduction.
contrast mitosis and meiosis:
mitosis creates new COPIES of cells, while meiosis creates new cells with variation.
