7.1 Permanent And Induced Magnets Flashcards
What do all magnets have ?
Two poles north and south
What do all magnets produce ?
A magnetic field
What is a magnetic field ?
A region where other magnets or magnetic materials experience a non contact force
Example of magnetic materials?
Iron, steel, nickel and cobalt
How can you show a magnetic field ?
By drawing magnetic field lines
Describe magnetic field lines ?
Go from north to south
Show which way a force would act on a North Pole if it was put in that point in the field
The close the magnetic field lines …
The stronger the magnetic field
Describe the force between a magnet and magnetic material
Always attractive
If two poles are put near each other what will happen ?
They will exert a force on each other. This can either be attractive or repulsive
What is inside a compass ?
A tiny bar magnet
Why is a compass used for building a picture of a magnetic field ?
The magnet in the compass is attracted to the South Pole of any other magnet so the compass points in the direction of the magnetic field
Why do compasses always point north ?
The earth generates its own magnetic field - the core of the earth must be magnetic
What are permanent magnets ?
Magnets that produce their own magnetic field
What are induced magnets ?
Magnetic materials that turn into a magnet when they’re put into a magnetic field
What is the force between permanent and induced magnets?
It’s always attractive
