5.5 Forces And Elasticity Flashcards
If you apply apply a force to an object what happens ?
You may cause it to stretch , compress or bend
To stretch or compress an object how many forces do you need ?
More than one force otherwise object would just move in the direction of that force
If an object has been elastically deformed what does it mean ?
It can go back to its original shape and length after the force has been removed
What happens if an object is inelastically deformed ?
It doesn’t return to its original shape and length after force has been removed
When a force stretches or compressed an object what will happen
Work is done and energy is transferred to the elastic potential store
If object is elastically deformed and work is done where is the energy getting transferred too ?
All of the energy will be going to the elastic potential store
What is the extension of a stretched spring directly proportional to ?
The force applied
What is the equation that for extension ?
Force = spring constant x extension
What does the spring constant rely on ?
The material you are stretching
A stiffer spring has a greater spring constant
When the force is great enough what happens to the extension
It is no longer proportional to the force (limit of proportionality)
