5.10 Terminal Velocity Flashcards
What happens if an object has no force propelling it along ?
It will always slow down and stop because of friction
What direction does friction act ?
The opposite direction to movement
When do you get friction
Between two surfaces in contact or when an object passes through a fluid
How do you reduce the amount of friction ?
Use a lubricant
What is drag ?
The resistance you get in a fluid ?
What is an example of drag ?
Air resistance
What is the most important factor to reduce drag ?
Keeping the shape of the object streamlined ( object is designed to allow fluid to flow easily )
What do Frictional forces from fluids increase with ?
Speed
When a falling object first sets off what happens ?
The force of gravity is much more than the frictional force slowing it down sos it accelerates
As speed increases what happens to the friction ?
It builds up
When friction builds up what gradually happens ?
The acceleration is reduced and eventually the frictional force is equal to the accelerating force (resultant force = 0)
Once a falling object has reached its terminal velocity what happens ?
It will fall at steady speed
The less streamlined an object is the ….
Lower it’s terminal velocity
Do objects with large surface areas have lower or higher terminal velocities
Lower
If a marble and beach ball dropped from tall building what happens ?
Beach ball - lower terminal velocity
More air resistance on ball so ball spend less time speeding up before air resistance is large enough to equal accelerating force
