What is the WMM
An explanation of how STM is organised and how it functions
What is the WMM concerned with
E.g. The part of the mind that is active when working on an arithmetic problem or playing comprehending language
Outline the order of WMM
Central executive
Visuospatial sketchpad Episodic buffer Phonological loop
Articulatory loop Phonological store
Long term memory
What is the role of the central executive
Essentially an attentions process which monitors incoming data and allocates slave systems to tasks - has a very limited storage capacity
What does the Phonological loop consist of
- Phonological store
- Articulatory loop
What is the role of the Phonological loop
Deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives
What is the role of the Phonological store
Stores words you hear
What is the role of the articulatory loop
Allows maintenance rehearsal - repeating sounds to keep them in the WM while they’re needed
What is the role of the visuo-spatial sketchpad
Stores visual and/or spatial information when required (e.g. Recalling how many windows your house has)
What is the VSS subdivided into
- Visual Cache
- Inner Scribe
What is the role of visual cache
Stores visual data
What is the role of the inner scribe
Records arrangement of objects in visual fields
What is the role of the episodic buffer
- It’s a temporary store for information
- Integrates visual, spatial and verbal information from other stores
- Maintains sense of time sequencing, recording events that are happening
