3. The Multi-store Model Of Memory AO1 Flashcards
What did Atkinson and Shriffin study
The multi-storey model of memory
What is the MSM?
Describes how informations flows through the memory system - memory is made of three stores linked by processing
What are the three stores linked by processing in the MSM
- Sensory register
- STM
- LTM
Explain the sensory register
A stimulus from environment passes into SR along with lots of other sights, sounds, etc - not one store by 5 - one for each sense
What is the duration of the sensory register?
Very brief - less than half a second
What is the capacity of the sensory register?
High - e.g. Over one hundred million cells in one eye each storing data
Explain coding of the sensory register?
Depends on the sense - visual, auditory, etc.
Explain the transfer from SR to STM
Little of what goes into SR passes further into the memory system - needs attention to be paid to it
What is the STM
A limited capacity and duration store
What is the duration of the STM?
About 18 seconds unless information is rehearsed
What is the capacity of the STM?
Between 5-9 items before forgetting occurs
What is the coding type of the STM?
Acoustic
Explain the transfer from STM to LTM
- Maintenance rehearsal occurs when we repeat/rehearse material ourselves
- We can keep info in the STM as long as we rehearse it
- If rehearsed for long enough it’s passed to LTM
What is the LTM
A permanent memory store
How to we recall info stored in the LTM
It has to be transferred back to STM by a process called retrieval
