4. The Multi-store Model Of Memory AO3 Flashcards
Name a strength of the MSM
Supported by research showing STM and LTM are different
What research supports the MSM
Baddeley - found we tend to mix up words that sound similar - but we mix up words that mean the same in out LTM - clearly shows coding is acoustic in STM & semantic in LTM
How does Baddeley’s research support the MSM
Supports MSM’s view that these two memory stores are separate and independent from each other
Name two limitations of the MSM
- Supporting studies use artificial materials
- MSM oversimplifies LTM
Explain how the use of artificial materials is an issue of the MSM
Artificial tasks like recalling digits - in everyday life we form memories related to all sorts of useful things (e.g. People’s faces) - suggests MSM lacks external validity - doesn’t reflect everyday life
Explain how the MSM oversimplifies LTM
There’s a lot of research evidence that LTM is not a unitary store - we have one LTM store semantic memories and another for episodic - MSM doesn’t reflect these different types
