6A.3 Coulomb's Law Flashcards
what is coulomb’s law
f=kQ1Q2/r^2 which comes from EQ=Q1Q2/r^2
an attraction between a proton and an electron can be imagined by
a proton creating an electric field of positive charge with the electron experiencing a force due to the protons field (note: it can be opposite)
what is an explanation of everyday levitation
so an atom has a negative charge electron orbiting so we can say that the top of any surface consists of a negative sheet, so if the bottom of a man’s foot is made of a negative sheet of electrons and the top of the floor is made of a negative sheet of electrons repulsion will occur so technically the man is levitating

what are the two ways to prove coulombs law experimentally
- by charging two insulated metal spheres using a van de graff generator, or induction by a charged plastic road, then putting the two spheres a distance away from each other creating a force that can be measured using an electronic balance, then measure the force and different distances proving that coulombs law is the inverse of the square law
