11B.3 Distances to the stars Flashcards
what is a light year
the distance that light can travel in one year, in a vacuum, which is about 10^16
what is astronomical unit AU
a distance unit, equal to the radius of the earths orbit around the sun 1 AU = 1.5 x 10^11
what is the trigonometric parallax
a method for measuring to distance to relatively close stars. it works by comparing their measured angle in the sky at six months intervals, and using these measurements to calculate the distance using trigonometry
how can we measure the angel between the star and the earth
by measuring the star against a background of distance star across a sixth month interval, where the earth would be in the same position on the other side
what is parallax angle
the difference in angular observation of given star, for use in the trigonometric parallax method to measure distance of the star
at small angles tan angle will equal
angle
what is parsec
the distance the star must be from the sun in order for the parallax angle to be 1 arcsecond
1 pc = 3.09 x 10^16
if angle is measured in arcsecond what is the distance of the star in parsecs
d = 1/angle
how much is one arcsecond in degrees
3600 since 1 degree can be split to 60 minutes and 1 minute can be split to 60 seconds
what is the equation of intensity of a star
I = L/A = L/4pir^2
what does the intensity equation tell us
the energy emitted by star will spread out in all directions over a surface area of an increasing sphere following the square inverse laws
what are standard candles
starts with properties such that their luminosity can be determined from measurements other than brightness
what are variable stars
stars in which their brightness change every repeating cycle
in variable stars what is the rs between the time period of oscillation brightness and luminosity
the time period for the oscillations brightness was constant and directly proportional to the luminosity of each star
what is the rs between time period of oscillations and brightness
the longer the time the brighter the star
