10A.3 SHM Energy Flashcards
an oscillator is a
closed system meaning that it cant gain or lose energy unless there is an external influence
at what position is the pendulum at maximum Ke
when the pendulum reaches its central position it will be travelling with a max speed so it will have a max KE
at what position is the pendulum at min Ke
when the pendulum reaches amplitude on both sides it becomes stationary so Ke drops to zero, at that point all the enrgy would be GPE
how is the energy conserved as a pendulum swings
so the pendulum when swinging it is an enclosed system so it cant gain or lose energy, when the pendulum is first dropped from a max height it has full GPE as it starts to fall back to its central position it will start converting the GPE into KE once the pendulum has reached the central position it will have max KE, when the pendulum swings the other side at the end of the swing or (amp) all of the KE would be converting into GPE
how does a swinging pendulum never lose or gain energy
its varying kinetic energy is must be transferred back and forth into another store
how does the energy changes of a pendulum on a EK x displacement look like
page 157
how is energy transferred for a mass attached to a spring
before releasing the mass the spring is stretched a little where it would have max elastic potential, once the spring is released it would accelerate the mass backwards towards the eq position as the elastic potential is converted into Ke with max KE at the original position, then the Ke will be converted into elastic potential as the spring squashes in another displacement direction making it reach another max elastic potential
which system would not have any energy lose
pendulum or mass attached to a spring in a vacuum other wise resistive forces will act and energy will be lost and the object will stop oscillating
