6A.1 Electric fields Flashcards
What is an electric field
a region of space that will cause charged particles to experience a force
how are X-rays made
by accelerating an electron using an electric field and then crashing it to a metal target causing X-rays to be formed
what are electric field lines
the imagined area where the electric field has an effect, it shows the direction that positively charged particles will be pushed through by the force of the electric field
if the electric field lines are closer together it shows
a stronger field, which means more force
what is the electrical field strength
the force-to-charge ratio for a charged particle experiencing a force due to an electric field
what is the equation for the force that acts on a charged particle in an electric field
F = electrical field strenght x charge
using F=ma and F=EQ how can we find how quickly a charge accelerates
a = EQ/m
what is electric potential
the measure of the possible electric energy in a location within that field, the energy per unit charge at that location
what is potentinal diffrence
it is the change of potential between two locations in a given field
how do we find Kenetic energy using potential difference
Ek = VQ
how do we set up uniform electric fields
by connecting two metal plates that are parallel to each other with a power supply
how do we set up uniform electric fields
by connecting two metal plates that are parallel to each other with a power supply
parrellel field line are parralel if
the field lines are parallel across the whole field
strength of an electric field is measured
on how rapidly it changes the potential difference over distance V/d
how can we investigate the shape of the electric field
water and oil with floating dry seeds, the seeds become charged when we apply a potential difference then the seeds would line up showing us electric field lines
