6.7 Achievement Motivation Theory Flashcards
Atkinson’s model
Suggested that performers in demanding situations would either exhibit NACH (need to achieve) or NAF (need to avoid failure) characteristics. Which is based of their personalities
NACH (need to achieve) performer
Personality characteristics;
- exhibits approach behaviour
-high self-efficacy
- enjoys comps + challenges
- will take risks
- welcomes feedback
- like an audience when performing
Situational characteristics;
- low probability of success
- high incentive
NAF (need to avoid failure) performer
Personality characteristics;
- exhibits avoidance behaviour
- low self-efficacy
- dislikes comps + challenges
- does not welcome feedback
- dislikes performing in front of an audience
Situational characteristics;
- high probability of success
- low incentive
Achievement goal Theory
Suggests every performer will have their own perception of what achievement means to them + what being successful means to them.
Outcome oriented goals are set with the specific aim to beat + show superiority over others
Task oriented goals do not seek to measure a persons ability against others but to master a skill or improve on own performance
To generate approach behaviour:
- ensure success by setting achievable goals
- raise confidence
- highlight successful role models
- credit internal reasons
