How does Christianity start emerging from Judaism?
- a subsect of Jews followed Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus!!! jesus!!! jesus!!!!!!)
- believed he would lead them away from the darkness (taxation and opperssion)
What and who were the Four Jewsih Subsects?
Pharisees - anti-Roman, found comfort in keeping alive traditions
Sadducees - supported the romans and preached that the Jews should compromise with the romans
Zealots - wanted to defeat the Romans with violence
Essenes - lived in a desert away from civilization, preached end of the world and wrote Dead Sea Scrolls
What were the main aspects of jesus’s life?
- born in 4 BCE, in Nazareth, was the Son of a carpenter
- engaged with scholars in a passover dinner at 12 yrs old
- becomes a powerful preacher by 30 yrs old, preached the end of the world and introduced the concept of the Kingdom of God (heaven)
- angers both romans and jewsih establishments with his teachings (they contradicted many of their traditional beliefs)
- many jews expected the MESSIAH to be a leader who would free them from roman rule rather than preach about a spiritual kingdom (jesus was then thought to be a fake messiah)
- he was seen as a messiah by his followers
- as jesus’s followers grew, so did his enemies
- at 33 yrs old, roman officials seized jesus and he was crucified to prevent his message from spreading
What was the impact of Jeesus’s “death”?
when he died, many people were confused,
- how did the messiah die?
- nothing happened after he died, he didn’t bring forward a kingdom of god, bring them into a enlightened kingdom, or free them from roman rule, he was oppressed
- this encouraged them to look into ancient Hebrew scriptures, and they found that jesus’s life matched the prophecies of the messiah’s life that had been written in there
- after he died, followers believed he was revived and joined God in heaven
- Christianity spread rapidly through the empire and became the official roman religion by the 4th century CE
what were jesus’s teachings and disciples?
- christianity borrowed ideas from older ones to attract followers
- many christinan rituals had roots in jewsih traditions but were given new meanings

2. bread and wine - Christianity introduced the idea that life on earth would change
1. kingdom of god - preached that a new divine order would replace earthly rule
2. the apocalypse & second coming of god (many early Christians believed the world was heading towards a final judgement where justice would be restored
these teachings challenged some jewish laws and customs which lead to conflict with religious authorities such as their dietary laws, sabbath laws, and marriage laws
- jesus also performed miracles such as healing the sick, walking on water, and feeding crowds
- the resurrectino of jesus was seen as evidence that jesus was the messiah and the son of god
What happened in 63 BCE?
Pompey (roman general), destroyed an uprising in Jerusalem, but under Caesar and Augustus, Jews are tolerated and allowed to practice monotheism
