- carthage located in North Africa, settled by Phoenician traders
- Rome and Carthage fight over power of trade routes in Meditteranean

- rome supported Messana when Messana and Carthage fought
- rome won, (won Carthaginian islands like siscily, corsica, and sardinia

- hannibal wanted to take revenge
- attacked rome from north when rome thought they wanted to attack from south (surprise attack)

- rome were scared and thought carthatge were gonna take revenge again
- went to carthage, completely destroyed and burned all their cities to the ground, sprinkled salt on the ground so nothing would every grow again
