6.4 Judaism in Roman Empire Flashcards
What were the Romans (Julius Caesar & Augustus Caesar’s) treatment towards the Jews?
At first, Jews were tolerated and allowed to practice monotheism
- the roman tolerated local regions as long as they didn’t threaten their rule
- Judaea had been a Roman ally and became a Roman province
- Jews had lived in Rome for a very long time in relative harmony
- they were protected by Rome and allowed to continue their religion
- then there was a rebellion in Judea due to Roman interference in Jewish affairs (taxes too)
- Romans destroyed thee Second Temple, the Second temple had been their center of worship so it was a turn ing point in their religious practice
- After another failed revolt, the Jews were forbidden from Jerusalem and they were scattered across the Roman Empire
- because of their lack of a temple, their religion started to mainly focus on synagogues and Torah study
