A pattern of drugs use where a person relies on a drug chronically and excessively, it is central to their life
What happens when substance use is stopped?
Withdrawal symptoms (physical and psychological)

-Adverse childhood experiences leads to increased risk
-Availability of addictive substances
-Individual circumstances
Individual differences in SUD:
-Age, body size, metabolism, and sensitivity.
-Identical twins more likely to develop SUD of one twin has it
-Adopted babies more likely to use if their biological parents did
-Risk taking personality type is common in those w/ SUD
