12.2 Flashcards
The Chemical Senses
What is the olfactory epithelium?
The receptor surface for olfaction
What is the mucous layer of the olfactory system - where cilia is housed - called?
Olfactory mucosa
How do the chemicals we inhale trigger cilia?
By dissolving into the olfactory mucosa
Are olfactory receptors ionotropic or metabotropic?
Metabotropic
What is the pathway of the olfactory system?
Receptor cells -> olfactory bulb (glomeruli) -> mitral cells -> cortex (amygdala and pyriform cortex)
What is the orbitofrontal cortex? (OFC)
Prefrontal cortex behind the eye sockets; receives projections from the dorsomedial nucleus of the thalamus; central to a variety of emotional and social behaviors, including eating; associates taste/odor with reward; secondary olfactory cortex
What are pheromones?
Biochemicals released by one animal that act as chemosignals and can affect the physiology or behavior of another animal of the same species
What olfactory receptor system detects pheromones?
The vomeronasal organ
Where does the vomeronasal organ connect to in the brain?
Accessory olfactory bulb -> amygdala and hypothalamus
What is the primary olfactory cortex?
The pyriform cortex
The _______ evaluates the affective properties of tastes, while the _______ identifies the nature and intensity of flavors
OFC; insula
