6-Raynaud Disease Flashcards
what is Raynaud disease
functional vasculopathy of unkown origin
how is raynaud disease characterized
sudden vasoconstriction of peripheral arteries of the extremities and other acral parts
what factors lead to sudden vasoconstriction in Raynauds disease
exagerrated response to stimuli such as temperature or emotional upset
what is the effet of sudden vasoconstriction
fingers change color in sequence:
- white (pallor)
- blue (cyanosis)
- red (reactive hyperemia)
what is hyperemia
presence of an increased amt of blood in a region or organ
why do tissues turn white, then blue, then red during sudden vasoconstriction
white–lack of blood
blue–vessels dilate to keep blood in tissue
red-blood flow returns
is there permanent damage in raynaud disease
no, very rare–digits might become smooth and shiny with loss of tissue and muscle
what happens histologically to blodd vessels in advanced cases of Raynauds disease
thickened arterial intima and thrombosis in small arteries
what is Raynaud phenomenon
this is Raynaud disease PLUS an underlying arterial disease such as atherosclerosis, SLE, scleroderma, Buerger disease
is Raynauds more common in men or women
more common in women (60-90%)
what is another name for Raynaud disease
Idiopathic Raynauds phenomenon
