Etiology of hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits
Eimeria stiedae
Where does Eimeria stiedae inhabit?
Bile duct epithelium
C/s of hepatic coccidiosis
Young: death without clinical signs
Adult: Liver pathology with associated bloodwork abnormalities
Pathology of hepatic coccidiosis
Hepatomegaly with white, flat nodules or cords on surface of liver
Hepatic coccidiosis tx
Sulfa-based antibiotics
Good vermin prevention
Eliminate fecal/oral spread
Two most pathogenic intestinal coccidioides
E. intestinalis
E. flavescens
C/S of intestinal coccidiosis
Diarrhea, anorexia, wt loss
Ddx for intestinal coccidiosis
Coliform enteritis, Tyzzers, mucoid enteropathy
Immune response to Eimeria?
Infection confers little immunity
Transmission of E. cuniculi
Urine/oral
C/S of E. cuniculi
Usually subclinical
Ataxia, torticollis, paresis, opisthotonus, tremors, convulsions
Histopath of E. cuniculi
Granulomatous lesions in KIDNEY, lung, liver, CNS
Tx for E. cuniculi
Fenbendazole + steroid (acute)
Chronic tx not helpful
Toxoplasmosis c/s in rabbits
Anorexia, fever, lethargy, CNS signs, death
How to tell difference between Toxo and E. cuniculi
Toxo is gram negative, negative for Carbol fuschin, Giemsa mauve
E cuniculi is gram positive, purple with Carbol fuschin, Giemsa blue
