6-Malignant Neoplasms of Bone Flashcards
What is an Osteosarcoma?
malignant neoplasm of osteoblastic cells that produces osteoid matrix (may calcify)
What is the most common primary malignancy of bone?
Osteosarcoma
7% occurs in bone
Osteosarcoma clinical features?
swelling and pain
loosening of adjacent teeth
paresthesia/anesthesia
Osteosarcoma radiographic appearance?
ill-defined lesion that blends into surrounding bone
symmetrical widening of periodontal membrane space
spiked root form
irregular root resorption
SUNBURST/SUN RAY appearance
What is Juxtacortical Osteosarcoma?
Osteosarcoma arising on cortical surface rather than in an intramedullary location
Local recurrence a major problem
What is Chondrosarcoma?
relatively unusual lesion of the jaw, malignant bone neoplasm producing cartilage but not bone
Chondrosarcoma clinical features?
Most over 50 to 6th/7th decades males slightly more affected non-painful loosening of adjacent teeth Paresthesia/anesthesia Mx>Mn
Chondrosarcoma Tx and Prognosis?
Recurrence can take years so 5 y/o survival not a good sign
What is Ewing’s Sarcoma?
Genetic defect
Primary bone tumor in children and adolescents
dismal prognosis
