6-Bone Inflammation Flashcards
What is osteolyelitis?
bone marrow inflammation with possible suppuration (pus formation)
Acute Osteomyelitis clinical presentation?
Significant pain Fever WBC rise Swelling of overlying tissues/lymph nodes Pus Necrotis bone sequestra Parasthesia
Radiographic appearance of Acute Osteomyelitis?
ill-defined, asymmetric radiolucency
Treatment for Acute Osteomyelitis?
antibiotics!!
surgical drainage if not spontaneous
Chronic Osteomyelitis clinical presentation?
Variable pain
Swelling
Tooth loss
Radiographic appearance of Chronic Osteomyelitis?
ill-defined, asymmetric radiolucency
increased density
Treatment for Chronic Osteomyelitis?
IV antibiotics
long duration
What is Chronic Focal Sclerosing Osteomyelitis?
Condensing Osteitis, a reaction to low grade odontogenic infection where the tooth is NON-VITAL
Radiographic appearance of Chronic Focal Sclerosing Osteomyelitis?
irregular opacity, asymmetric and blends
What is Chronic Diffuse Sclerosing Osteomyelitis?
reaction to low grade odontogenic infection following trauma or surgery, but affects large area of bone in 1 quandrant
Radiographic appearance of Chronic Diffuse Sclerosing Osteomyelitis?
diffuse radiopacity of varying density in Posterior Md
What is Chronic Osteomyelitis with Proliferative Periostitis?
low grade osteomyelitis in younger patients, inflammation involves periosteum on or near cortical surface, draining sinus tract from an infected tooth most often
Radiographic appearance of Chronic Osteomyelitis with Proliferative Periostitis?
thin layering of cortical bone
Onion skin pattern
lucency under cortex
What is Alveolar Osteitis?
dry socket post extraction from loss/breakdown of blood clot
Treatment for Alveolar Osteitis?
packing of socket with protective dressing
