6-Benign Neoplasms of Bone Flashcards
What is Exostosis?
localized proliferation of bone that arises from cortical plate in a single or multiple sites (sporadic)
What are some site specific Exostosis?
Tori
Torus palatinus
Torus mandibularis
Where does Exostosis usually occur?
Mx or Md alveolar ridge bilaterally
Md = lingual premolar
What occurs because of Exostosis?
ulcerate easily
What is an Osteoma?
localized proliferation of bone
Where does Osteoma usually occur?
craniofacial skeleton
rarely outside of head
Osteomas may be a manifestation of what disease?
Gardner’s Syndrome
What is Gardner’s Syndrome? (Will ask this on boards)
autosomal dominant disorder
multiple osteomas in jaw, Md in particular
multiple ademonatous polyps of colon and rectum
What does Gardner’s Syndrome cause?
colon cancer
100% incidence of malignant transformation
What is Chondroma?
benign neoplasm of cartilage, 20-40 y/o, exceedingly rare in head/neck region
Most lesions diagnosed as Chondromas are really what?
low grade chondrosarcomas
What is an Osteoid Osteoma?
rare neoplasm of bone
usually less than 30 and males 2:1
Osteoid Osteoma clinical presentation (on boards)?
nocturnal pain relieved by aspirin
Osteoid Osteoma radiographic appearance?
small lesion
looks like a target
central opacity
peripheral halo
What is Osteoblastoma?
rare neoplasm of bone in craniofacial skeleton
Md most common
Males
