6. Histology of respiratory system Flashcards
URT
Nasal cavity
Pharynx
Larynx
LRT
Trachea Bronchioles Bronchi Lung Diaphragm
Role of URT
filtering, humidifying, and modifying the temperature of inspired air
Respiratory mucosa
PsCCE+ lamina propria
What type of epithelium lines the URT
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium (PsCCE)
where does the LRT begin?
larynx (true vocal chords)
type of endothelium in the smallest airways
simple cuboidal non-ciliated
type of endothelium in alveoli
simple squamous
Goblet cells
occur in the trachea
decrease in number throughout the system
are absent in the terminal bronchioles
Towards the end of the bronchiole system the goblet cells are entirely replaced by Clara cells
Hypertrophy
increase in cell size
Hyperplasia
increase in cell size
3 functions of Clara cells
- They produce one of the components of surfactant
- They act as reserve cells, i.e. they are able to divide, differentiate and replace other damaged cell types
- They contain enzyme systems which can detoxify noxious substances
Type I pneumocyte
cannot replicate, oxygen exchange
Type II pneumocyte
can proliferate and differentiate
surfactant
