Many years after the time of Noah, there was a man named Abram. He was seventy-five years old and his wife, Sarai, was also old. And they had no children. One day, God appeared to Abram and said, “Abram, you must leave your country. You must leave your family. And you must leave your father’s house and go to a place that I will show to you. And I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. And I will bless all the peoples of the world through you.” So Abram took his wife, and his nephew, Lot, and he traveled south. When they came to the land of Canaan, God said, “This is the place I am giving you and your descendants.” So they settled there and Abram offered sacrifices to God.

The king sent Sarai back to Abram and said to him, “Why did you lie to me?! Why did you tell me she was your sister when she was your wife? Now, Go! Leave this place!” So Abram and his family traveled back to Canaan and settled there again.

Abraham and Lot had so many animals, that the land was not strong enough to support them both, and arguments broke out among their herdsmen. Abram said to Lot, “Let us not quarrel. Look over the land. If you choose the hills, I will go to the valley. If you choose the valley, I will stay in the hills.” Lot looked at the land and saw that the valley was very beautiful. It was full of tall grass good for animals and water. So he moved his herds to the valley and left Abram on the rocky hills.

Then God appeared to Abram and said, “Do not be afraid. I have given this whole land to you. I am your shield and your reward.” But Abram said, “What good is it if you bless me when I have no son to inherit?” And God took Abram out and showed him the sky. He said, “If you can count the stars, then you will be able to count your descendants.” And Abram believed God and God counted it (his faith) to him as righteousness. Then God told Abram to offer him a sacrifice. Abram killed a cow, a goat, a ram, and two birds and cut their bodies in half. He laid one half on this side and the other half on that side. And God appeared as a flame of fire moving between the halves of the animals. And God said, “Your descendants will be slaves in a foreign land. But after 400 years, I will bring them back to this land. But you will live to be a very old man.”
