There were a lot of prosecutions and deaths. They had to pay high taxes, protestants got killed

Not really, every province had it’s own law but they did come together when each province sent a representative to the states general
General meeting
first created in 1386 with the direct goal of gathering more money. However, under Charles V these meetings only were arranged when he called them together, which rarely happened

The highest Dutch nobles (mostly counts and dukes) ruled a province (gewest) in the function of “Stadtholder”. They had sworn loyalty to their king (Philip II) and had promised to execute the king’s policies in the Low Countries.

Why did the supporters of the Petition call themselves “Beggars”?
Because one of Margaret’s Spanish advisors called them “beggars” and they adopted it as a name of honor.
