Subordinates
words that link a clause to another clause, making it a dependent, or subordinate, clause.
Subordinates fall into two main categories
relative pronouns and subordinating conjunctions
Relative pronouns
who, whom, which, that, and their indefinite forms whoever, whomever, whichever.
Relative pronouns can serve as
the subject or object in the clause.

Luke, who grew up on Tatooine, never thought he’d be back. what is the subordinate clause, the subject and verb?
who grew up on Tatooine is the subordinate clause, with who as the subject and grew up as the verb.
The Death Star plans, which the Bothan spies stole, were used to plot the attack. What is the subordinate clause, direct object, and verb?
which the bothane spies stole is the subordinate clause, with which as the direct object of the verb stole.
Subordinating conjunctions
conjunctions such as until, unless, if, how, wherever, because, after, and although, among others. Often indicate a time frame or consequence.
Once, we finished our essays, we could enjoy the beautiful day. What is the subordinating conjunction and subordinating clause introduced by it?
“Once” is the subordinating conjunction, and “we finished our essays” becomes a subordinate clause once “once” introduces it.
