5.1 Subject and Predicate Flashcards
What is the subject of a sentence?
A noun or pronoun that does the action or is something.
Where is the subject located in a sentence?
Almost always before the verb, but may not be at the beginning of the sentence, and there may be other words between the subject and verb.
what is the predicate?
It’s what finishes the sentence. It’s the verb, usually with a direct object or subject complement.
What does a direct object do?
It follows an action verb and answers the question “Whom?” or “what?”.
What is a direct object?
A noun or pronoun or can be a whole clause.
ex. the children at the party ate cake.
cake is what they ate, the direct object.
then they played a game.
game is what they played, the direct object.
Do all action verbs require a direct object?
No but most can take them.
What is a subject complement?
They can be single words, phrases, or entire clauses, but the important thing is they are telling you more about the subject.
ex. This bracket is what you need to fix the shelf.
the verb IS links the complement, what you need, with the subject, bracket.
How does the word order of a question differ?
You put the subject between an auxiliary verb and the main verb.
ex. Did you find anything? The pronoun you is the subject. Did… find anything is the predicate.
