5.4 Clauses Flashcards
A clause
is a group of words that has a subject and predicate.
Can be independent or dependent.
Independent clauses
are complete sentences that can stand on there own.
ex. We were late. (independent clause, complete sentence)
Dependent clause or subordinate clauses
are not complete sentences. they must be part of a larger sentence.
ex. Because we were late. (dependent clause, not a complete sentence. you expect additional info when you encounter a clause like this.)
Compound sentence
is when you combine two independent clauses with a conjunction such as and or but. Neither clause is subordinate.
ex. He cooks and we clean up. (Two independent clauses.)
Complex sentences are created by
attaching a subordinate clause to the main clause.
ex. After he cooks, we clean up. (Dependent clause plus independent clause.)
