5.2 Transport Processes Flashcards
What is Bulk Flow?
Movement of fluids from high pressure to low pressure.
What is Diffusion?
Movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium.
What is Protein-Mediated Transport?
Uses proteins in the cell membrane to transport molecules across.
What is Vesicular Transport?
Uses vesicles to transport large molecules or particles.
What does Selectively Permeable Mean?
Cell membranes allow some substances to pass through but not others.
What is Passive Transport?
Movement of molecules according to concentration gradients without energy input.
What is Active Transport?
Movement of molecules against concentration gradient requiring energy
what are factors affecting permeability?
- Size; smaller molecules tend to pass more easily
- Lipid solubility: lipid molecules tend to pass more easily
